“You don’t take a photograph…you make it” – Ansel Adams


Adams was an early influence on my work.

His style of capturing and then, printing using the Zone System had a huge effect on how I wanted to make my images and also on how I see the world through my lenses.

Early on, I focused primarily on B&W (including Infrared) image capture and printing. While I had a tremendous amount of success shooting B&W, I eventually wanted to reach a larger market that shooting B&W alone did not address. I began to shoot more and more color images with increased success. Unfortunately, I missed the emotion I felt while creating B&W images.

After wandering around for some time primarily shooting Color to meet the needs of a larger audience (and all the while still longing for my B&W roots) I hit upon the idea of combining both Color and B&W into single images. While the use of hand painting over B&W images had been around for some time, hand tinting images was not my passion.

Instead, I began to shoot creating both B&W and Color images of the same scenes with the intent of combining them via layering in the post-shoot production process. Not only did I have immediate success with the method, but my yearning for my B&W connection was fulfilled. I also loved loved the new ability to highlight the subject of a B&W image with a color focal point.

Not long after this transition, High Dynamic Range techniques became available. This process compresses multiple images shot of the same scene (but at different exposure values) which allows for the capture of a full range of light not normally caught in a single frame. Rich textures began to emerge. The results can be stunning when done in moderation. When combined with the B&W-Color layering process, greater depths of field unfolded. I continue to incorporate HDR and the layering process into my method of shooting and development as I move forward.




After a long Corporate Career in business I sought new challenges and returned to school for two years to learn commercial photography. I was classically trained on all camera formats. During this time, camera and printing technology experienced exponential growth. Subsequently, I had the oportunity to study during both ends of an unprecedented transition. I now primarily shoot 35mm digital SLR cameras. Regardless, I still rely on my early knowledge of the Zone System and, combined with the latest techniques, I “make” the image I see in my mind’s eye.


My goal is to share the emotion and energy of the people, places and things I have the opportunity to visit.
